Connect Digital Hive to Tableau Cloud

Connect Digital Hive to Tableau Cloud

As of the 2025.2 Digital Hive release, Tableau Cloud is a supported content system and an out of the box connector is available. Before Tableau Cloud can be added to Digital Hive, a Connected App must first be created within the Tableau Cloud settings.

Alert
Digital Hive leverages the Tableau JWT authentication mechanism which requires the Digital Hive user name and the Tableau Cloud user name be identical for SSO to function properly. If the Digital Hive user name is different than the Tableau Cloud user name, then the PAT (Personal Authentication Token method must be utilized).

Tableau Cloud Prerequisites

  1. Launch Tableau Cloud as an Administrator
  2. From the menu, click
  3. Click on the Connected Apps tab
  4. Using the New Connected App dropdown, select Direct Trust

  5. Create a new Connected App by specifying a name, which projects will be required within Digital Hive and the allowed domains

  6. Press Create
  7. Press the Generate New Secret button to create the app secret

  8. Using the Actions dropdown, select Copy ID
  9. Record the app ID somewhere as it will be required later on in the configuration steps
  10. Click on the eye icon  beside the obfuscated Value  to expose the secret
  11. Using the Actions dropdown, select Copy Value
  12. Record the app Value somewhere as it will be required later on in the configuration steps
  13. Click Back to Connected Apps at the top of the page
  14. By default, the newly created Connected App will be in a disabled state

  15. To enable the Connected App, click on the Actions ellipsis and select Enable
  16. The resulting Connected App should now be in an enabled state
  17. Copy and record the Client ID string as it will be required later on in the configuration step
  18. The last piece of information required is the Site name. Look at the current URL in the browser and copy the value right after /site/. For example using https://online.tableau.com/#/site/digitalhive/connectedApplications as the URL, digitalhive would be the site name

Using Personal Access Tokens (PAT)

If the Digital Hive and Tableau Cloud user names do NOT match, SSO will fail so PATs must be used. To create the Personal Access Tokens:

InfoTwo Personal Access Tokens MUST be created for the user admin user account that will be used to index Tableau Cloud content within Digital Hive. This is because the same PAT can not be used for both system indexing and an individual user account.
  1. Within Tableau Cloud, click
  2. On the General tab, locate the Personal Access Token section
  3. Enable the personal access tokens, specify all users or a particular group that can create PATs, as well as an expiration period

  4. Click on the user Avatar in the upper right hand corner and select My Account Settings
  5. On the Settings tab, locate the Personal Access Tokens section
  6. Enter a meaningful name for the Digital Hive system user PAT and press Create Token

  7. This will produce a pop-up that shows you the PAT details. Press Copy Secret and save that value for a future configuration step

  8. Press Done
  9. Enter another name for the user PAT and press Create Token again
  10. Copy the new secret and save that value as well
  11. Press Done
  12. The result should be two personal access tokens with two unique secret values

Creating the Digital Hive Tableau Cloud Connector

  1. Log into Digital Hive as an Administrator
  2. Click on the user Avatar and select Manage Digital Hive
  3. From within the Digital Hive Control Center, open the Content - Connectors page
  4. Press New Connector
  5. Select Tableau Cloud from the list of available connector types

  6. Provide a Display Name that will appear within Digital Hive
  7. If the Digital Hive user name and the Tableau Cloud user name matches, select Tableau Cloud JWT Token as the Authentication Method

  8. If the Digital Hive user names are different than the Tableau Cloud user names, Personal Access Tokens must be used so select Tableau Cloud Personal Access Token as the Authentication Method

  9. If using JWT, the System Credentials section will be empty, go to step 15
  10. If using PAT, in the System Credentials section, provide the Tableau Cloud Digital Hive system user token name as the Username
  11. Enter the corresponding PAT secret as the Password

  12. In the Your Account section, make sure that the A different account option is selected
  13. Provide the Tableau Cloud admin user token name as the Username
  14. Enter the corresponding PAT secret as the Password

  15. In the Server Information section, press + Add Server Info button
  16. The Server Type will be Tableau Cloud Server
  17. The Base URL will be the root URL of your Tableau Cloud instance, for instance https://online.tableau.com ensuring that there is no trailing slash after the base URL

  18. In the Properties section
Admin username will be the Tableau Cloud user name that matches the Digital Hive user name. This option won't be here if using Personal Access Tokens
Site Name will be the subset of the Tableau Cloud URL that was noted in step 18 of the Tableau Cloud prerequisites section of this article
Connected App Client ID will be the value that was noted in step 17 of the Tableau Cloud prerequisites section of this article
Connected App Secret ID will be the value that was noted in step 8 of the Tableau Cloud prerequisites section of this article
Connected App Secret Value will be the value that was noted in step 11 of the Tableau Cloud prerequisites section of this article
API Version will be at least 3.17

  19. Press Next. If all configuration values are accurate, you will now be able to select which Content to make available in Digital Hive

NotesOnce the connector has been added, source content will have to be 'enabled' to be accessible from within Digital Hive. Please consult this document for further steps: https://support.digitalhive.com/portal/en/kb/articles/enable-connector-content-in-digital-hive
