Connecting to Google Looker

Connecting to Google Looker

Question

How do we connect Digital Hive to Google Looker?

Answer

Programmatic authentication into Looker works differently than most other BI content providers. Instead of leveraging the standard username and password, or token, approaches, Looker relies on unique API3 keys being generated for every user. These keys will contain both a Client ID as well as a Client Secret that the user will persist as part of their Digital Hive user profile.

As a Looker Administrator:
  1. Enter the Admin area by clicking on the  menu option
  2. Click on Users in the Users section of the left-hand menu
  3. Locate the desired Looker user and select corresponding Edit button
  4. Click on the  button
  5. Generate a the key using the New API3 Key button
  6. This will create a new key and display it in the list
  7. Press the  button to reveal the Client Secret
  8. Copy both of the values and provide it to the user so that they can 'Unlock' the Looker Connector within Digital Hive, once the Looker Connector has been added to Digital Hive following the steps below have been completed
Note: A user will privileges to see all of the desired Looker content, or Service Account, will need to be leveraged during the Looker Connector setup, so repeat the previous steps for that user account.

As a Digital Hive administrator, connecting to Looker by Google can be accomplished via the following steps:
  1. Open the Digital Hive Control Center
  2. Click on the Connectors and select New Connector
  3. Select Looker
  4. Provide a name for the Connector
  5. Select an authentication method that matches how users authenticate into Looker (currently, only Looker OAuth ID Secret is available)
  6. To connect successfully, enter the Login Endpoint Base URL for your Looker instance. For example https://digitalhive.cloud.looker.com making sure that the Path is /login
  7. In the Properties section, set the URL value to 4.0

Once the connector has been added, source content will have to be 'enabled' to be accessible from within Digital Hive. Please consult this document for further steps: https://support.digitalhive.com/portal/en/kb/articles/enable-connector-content-in-digital-hive
