Set a Custom Thumbnail for Content

Question

Not all of my content has an automatically generated thumbnail but I would like to have a thumbnail appear for a specific report. Is it possible to configure a thumbnail for a specific piece of content?

Answer

Yes, as of the Digital Hive 2.1 release it is possible to assign a custom thumbnail, or override a system generated thumbnail, to content coming from a third-party system. The custom thumbnail would be visible for all users across all Hives. As the thumbnail is set on the content, there is no way to configure different thumbnails for a single piece of content for use across different Hives.
  1. As an Administrator, or a member of a role that has the Explore Content and Manage Content Thumbnails (version 2024.1) capabilities granted, launch Explore Content by clicking on the user avatar
  2. Navigate to the folder that contains the desired content
  3. Hover the mouse over the content object and click on the vertical three dots icon  
  4. Select Properties to open the object's property panel 

  5. Hover over the empty thumbnail until the Pencil icon  appears
  6. Click on the Pencil icon which will launch the native operating system file explorer
  7. Navigate to the desired thumbnail and select it
  8. Press OK (or Open depending on your OS)
  9. After a few seconds the custom thumbnail should appear
This technique will allow you to add custom thumbnails to content from systems that do not provide default thumbnails, like PowerBI and IBM Cognos Analytics.
