Tableau Views are not Resizing as Expected

Tableau Views are not Resizing as Expected

Question

When embedding a Tableau view onto a Digital Hive page, the visualization isn't resizing as expected. In Tableau, the view is set to fit the 'Entire View' so it should resize nicely.

But when the Tableau view is embedded within Digital Hive, the view does not reduce in size as expected.

How do we configure Digital Hive to respect the sizing that was defined in Tableau?

Answer

When a report or dashboard object is embedded within Digital Hive, the rendering (and resizing) of the object is handled by the underlying BI system, in this case Tableau. With this in mind, let's take examine how the object resizes directly within Tableau.

You can see from the following image that launching the same visualization in Tableau and resizing the browser window, produces the same results as viewing the object within Digital Hive.

The reason that the visualization isn't resizing, although the settings indicate otherwise, is that the workbook was published with the tabs across the tab, more specifically, when the workbook was published to Tableau server, the option to Show sheets as tabs was selected.

The presence of the tabs prevents the resizing of the visual because the tabs do not resize. This essentially creates a minimum fixed width for the visual. To remedy the problem, republish the workbook and ensure that the Show sheets as tabs option is NOT selected.

Once republished, the resizing parameter will be respected and the visualization will display as expected in both Tableau and Digital Hive.

If the tabbed workbook is desired by the end users, then you could make a copy of the view(s) within Tableau and have those as extra objects, or a copy of the workbook could be copied and saved to a different location within Tableau
