Connecting to Tableau Server

Connecting to Tableau Server

Question

How do we connect Digital Hive to Tableau Server?

Answer

Before Digital Hive can successfully connect to Tableau Server, the Digital Hive server URL or IP address must be added to the Tableau Trusted Authentication list. This operation must be performed by a Tableau Server administrator. More details are available from Tableau.

As a Digital Hive administrator, connecting to Tableau can be accomplished via the following steps:
  1. Open the Digital Hive Control Center
  2. Click on the Connectors and select New Connector
  3. Select Tableau Server
  4. Provide a name for the Connector
  5. Select an authentication method that matches how users authenticate into Tableau Server
  6. Select Internal Tableau Server for the Server Type property
  7. Enter the base URL for the Tableau server
  8. The value for the API version property will depend on the version of the Tableau Sever that is deployed. If the specific version is not known, use the default value
  9. If the Tableau report footer is not desired, then enable the Hide Toolbar property
By default, the Tableau Connector will connect to the Tableau Default site. To connect to a specific Tableau site, for example a site called Customer Success:
  1. In a browser tab, open the Customer Success Tableau site and record the URL. In this example, the URL for the Customer Success site is https://tableau.domain.com/#/site/CustomerSuccess/home
  2. Copy the site name from the URL exactly as it is, which would be CustomerSuccess
  3. In the Tableau Connector properties in Digital Hive, set the Content URL property to CustomerSuccess

Alert
Note: Currently, multiple Tableau Connectors will be required for multiple sites as each connector can only read from a single site

NotesOnce the connector has been added, source content will have to be 'enabled' to be accessible from within Digital Hive. Please consult this document for further steps: https://support.digitalhive.com/portal/en/kb/articles/enable-connector-content-in-digital-hive

JWT Authentication

For Tableau environments that use the JWT authentication method, some additional steps are required for the Digital Hive Tableau connector definition.
  1. In the Tableau connector properties, click on the Settings tab
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click SHOW ADVANCED
  3. Provide the values for the JWT Secret ID, JWT Secret Value, and JWT Client ID fields

  4. Press Save
The values required for step 3 can be found in the Tableau administration Settings.
